Akront Rims on 1976 Commando Mk3

My new (to me) Commando Mk3 Interstate has Akront alloy rims. The rear tyre needs replacing and I'm unsure of the type of modern tyre that I can fit. The existing tyre is a Metzeler ME1 120x80 VB18 and the rim is stamped 2.50-4-S-296E.

Presumably an 18 inch 120/80 Avon Roadrider (AM26)will fit. .

Any advice on whether that will be Ok or any other information about a suitable tyre appreciated.

I think members of the Jerry Doe Access Norton (Norton Commando) website forum http://www.accessnorton.com/ who have AM 26 Roadriders, usually use the 100/90 size on the rear, either in the original 19" diameter Commando rear wheel size, or 18" diameter if the rim has been changed to allow a wider choice of rear tyres. I think a few Access Norton members experienced some handling problems with wider rear tyres if I remember correctly.

A 2.50 rim size is a bit narrow for a 120/90 tyre, and the Avon Roadrider rear fitment recommendation for an 850 Commando is either 4.10 or 100/90 (in the original 19" size) on a 2.50 rim.

I eventually went for the 120/80 Avon Roadrider but found, when I took the wheel off, that both hub bearings were shot. Took some time to get the new bearings and seals (Andover-Norton and Norvil) but the end result is much improved handling. No doubt some of that is bearings but the tyre feels secure on most surfaces.

Next problem is the front brake which is poor. It has a non-standard AP Lockheed caliper for which I can't find a part number or a supplier for pads.
