Not a lot to say. Took it apart and found very little that was reusable.

I bet those gears whine like a Caliph in a cat-house. :101
Lack of oil, or just too much use?

The patented Velocette wavy involute tooth form~?

Well all the gears were like that. That's third, I went to a velo felo who has lot's of parts, I expected to be able to
get a whole set of gears. Every gear he had was like the pictured one and it seems that every box he has taken
apart has needed second[which isn't available, but you can cut down a venom 2nd gear]! Gearbox cover had
several cracks, so have to hope the gears were so bad cos it had been run dry. As you would expect it cost quite
a lot to replace all the gears, I bought new shafts as well, but after looking at secondhand gears that were worn I
decided no way would i buy a box without looking indside it.

Want to see some special piston rings?

All I can say about these is why?

This is very basic gear info, but will tell you how screwed your gears are.

with the amout of wear on the tooth face, your back lash will be way over the top which will lead to noisy gears and also rin the risk of tooth failure with resulting destruction of the gear box being terminal.

Well not really because I am posting as an imposter as I no longer have one. I used to have an early fifties 350 MAC in the mid/late sixties when I was barely old enough to ride that I bought for a tenner and also used to have a mate with a Venom /Steib combination which was really great fun.
I must admit that I would like a Venom now if I came across one at the right price (highly unlikely). What I do remember is that the build quality was next excellent. I remember decoking the MAC and the carbon just pinged off the head revealing mirror finish aluminium with no machining marks or bubbles. A far cry from what you see in a later triumph unless you were very lucky.
Perhaps there are lurking posters who have memories or experiences (good or bad) of Velocettes.

So you think I should replace that gear pair.
